SLEEP EASY WITH THE RIGHT DUVET FOR THE SEASON

Are you losing sleep because your bedding isn’t right – freezing in winter and fiery in summer? 

It sounds like it’s time for a change….  But before you buy some new duvets or bedding, Perth-based bed linen professionals, Baines Manchester, have some advice for you.

Duvets (or doonas and continental quilts as they are also known) are the number one choice of bedding for practical and aesthetic reasons.  How warm a duvet is depends on its tog rating, the material it’s made from and the weight of the duvet.  The TOG refers to the amount of body heat that the duvet retains and has nothing to do with thickness or weight. 

For warm weather, a duvet with a tog of 3 to 3.5 is generally suitable, autumn and spring (9 or 10.5 tog) and winter, a tog of 13.5 will be snug and cozy. 

Some manchester suppliers recommend using the four seasons style duvets (a lower tog and a higher tog in one doona cover) which can be used separately or together depending on the temperature.

Your sleep patterns will also be influenced by the filling of your duvet.  Natural fillings such as goose or duck down and feathers, silk, cotton and wool may be viewed as premium products, but they do offer a better quality of sleep as they ‘breathe’ naturally and absorb body moisture. 

The type of sheet you use also determines how you sleep.  For a cool bed in the heat, try cotton percale with a high thread count (300-plus) and for cosy comfort in winter, try a flannel, fleece or sateen sheet.  Having a few extra blankets to throw on (or off) the bed linen during the winter months is always a good idea – and cotton or wool are the best blanket choice.  And if you’re lucky enough to have an heirloom quilt and quilt cover…use that as the ‘icing on the cake’!.
